revisiting bandung

the early 20th century colonial laboratory of dutch east indian architecture

published thesis

published thesis

Finally wrapped up my thesis after a long journey! It turned out to be a personal exploration as much as an academic one, with unexpected twists. You can check it out on the Politesi website. Happy reading!

a long journey of research and self exploration

The process of writing this research took more than a year. Most of which, was spent requestioning my own sanity. It started as an obsession of modern architecture in Bandung (which I always thought of something that we need to be proud of), but ended as a critique to it.

After the half mark of the process, I decided to turn it upside down – I started listing down questions rather than trying to find answers to it. The thesis itself challenges my core belief – my core knowledge of the topic.

Now that the thesis itself is finished, I realized that what I have learned can also be unlearned. Now that I have unlearned, I realized that there is still so much to be learned. Now that there is still so much to be learned, the thesis itself has yet to be started.

cataloging data

cataloging data

I have used GIS as a tool to help me catalog most of the case studies in the early process of my research. This helped me a lot in visualizing the traces of modernism in the historical urban fabric of Bandung. Now that I have cleaned it up a bit, I'm sharing it for everyone to see and use if needed. Also, for eventual questions about anything in this map, just contact me and I will be glad to help!

revisiting the 20th century laboratory of colonial architecture

I would repeat the same statement as I did in the conclusion of my thesis: that maybe what we need now is not anymore answers to outdated questions of the past, but rather to revisit and reinstate the questions itself.

What was our tropicality? What was our modernism(s)? What was the Dutch East Indian architecture?

What was and still is our own architectural traditions?
